Fix these three things before you spend a shekel on ads

Most "bad ad campaigns" are actually fine campaigns pointing at broken foundations. Check these three things before you put money behind anything.

Here's a pattern we see monthly: a business runs ads, gets clicks, gets nothing else, and concludes "ads don't work for us."

The ads usually worked. The click went somewhere broken. Money spent on traffic is wasted until the three things below are fixed — and all three cost far less than one month of ad budget.

1. The place the click lands

Tap your own ad like a customer would. Where do you end up?

If it's a homepage that mentions everything you do, a Facebook page last updated in spring, or — worst — a link that opens slowly on mobile, you're paying for visitors and then losing them in the first five seconds.

The fix isn't always a full website. Sometimes it's one focused landing page: the offer from the ad, three lines of proof, one button. The ad and the landing page should feel like one continuous sentence.

Check: does the page load in under three seconds on your own phone, on mobile data? If not, start there.

2. What happens when they message you

Most ad clicks in our market don't buy on the page — they message. WhatsApp, Instagram DM, the contact form.

Now the brutal question: how fast do you answer? Because the person who clicked your ad also clicked two competitors' ads. The first business that answers usually wins, and "usually" gets close to "always" after working hours.

This is exactly the job for an auto-reply agent — instant first response, answers to the common questions, and a qualifying question back so the conversation is warm when you pick it up. Every hour of reply delay is ad money quietly burning.

Check: message your own business at 9 PM tonight. Time the response. That number is part of your ad performance whether you like it or not.

3. What they find when they check you

Before buying, people verify. They open your Instagram — is it alive? They read your reviews — what's the last one, and did anyone reply to the bad ones?

You don't need ten thousand followers. You need signs of life: recent posts, consistent look, answered reviews. A feed that died in winter tells the visitor that maybe the business did too.

Check: look at your last nine posts as a stranger would. Would you trust this business with your money?

The order matters

Fix them in this order — landing page, response speed, proof — and then turn ads on. Each fix multiplies the next: fast page × instant reply × visible credibility is how a modest budget outperforms a big careless one.

Ads are a volume knob. They amplify whatever's already there. Make sure what's there deserves the volume.

Start this week

Run the three checks above on your own business tonight — the phone test, the 9 PM message, the stranger's scroll. Whatever fails first is your real marketing priority. The ad budget can wait a week; it'll work harder when it arrives.
